François Mitterrand, a former Socialist president, denounced “money that rots the very conscience of people.” Nicolas Sarkozy, who is running for re-election, was damaged by the tag “president of the rich” when he cut taxes and hung out with rich businessmen. Now François Hollande, the Socialist front-runner, has surprised some advisers by proposing a 75% tax rate on household incomes above €1m ($1.3m) a year.
