French left votes for Socialist presidential candidate
Left-wing voters in France are taking part in the second round of a US-style primary to decide the Socialist Party's presidential election candidate.
They will choose between former party leader Francois Hollande and current leader Martine Aubry, who came first and second in the first voting round.Mr Hollande is the clear favourite having received 39% to Ms Aubry's 31% of the vote last Sunday.
Opinion polls suggest either candidate could beat President Nicolas Sarkozy. The incumbent president is widely expected to run for re-election in April, although he has not yet declared.Mr Hollande became the new favourite after the withdrawal of previous front-runner Dominique Strauss-Kahn, a former head of the International Monetary Fund who was arrested in New York earlier this year on suspicion of attempted rape, a charge later dropped.
Personality and electabilityFor the first time, any registered elector willing to pay a one-euro fee and sign a pledge that they recognise the values of the Socialist Party have been entitled to vote for their presidential candidate. Some 2.7 million people voted in the first round, which reduced the number of candidates from six to two. Mr Hollande, a bespectacled 57-year-old who served as Socialist Party leader for more than a decade but has never held a national government post, took the lead and has since had the endorsement of the four candidates who were knocked out. That should easily be enough to put him ahead of Martine Aubry, the BBC's Hugh Schofield in Paris says. Ms Aubry, 61, is the current Socialist Party chief and mayor of the northern city of Lille. The daughter of former European Commission President Jacques Delors, she served as labour minister during the late 1990s during which she introduced France's 35-hour working week.
In terms of policy, there is very little to separate the two contenders, our correspondent says. They are both from the party's mainstream, and have both helped put together its political programme - which calls for the creation of 300,000 public sector jobs for young people and the reduction to 60 of the legal retirement age. So, the choice for Sunday's voters is more about personality and electability, and the fact that Mr Hollande has been given a much bigger lead may be enough for many on the left, our correspondent says.

Präsidentenwahl: Stichwahl bei französischen Sozialisten
Paris — In Frankreich ist die Stichwahl für die Kandidatur der französischen Sozialisten bei der Präsidentschaftswahl im kommenden Jahr angelaufen. In fast 10.000 Wahllokalen konnten sich die Anhänger der Partei zwischen dem früheren Parteichef François Hollande und der Bürgermeisterin der nordfranzösischen Stadt Lille, Martine Aubry, entscheiden. Die Stimmabgabe soll bis 19.00 Uhr möglich sein, das Ergebnis wird für 21.30 Uhr erwartet. Hollande kam im ersten Durchgang am vergangenen Sonntag bei fünf Mitbewerbern auf einen Anteil von 39 Prozent der Stimmen, auf Aubry entfielen gut 30 Prozent. Da sich die übrigen vier Mitbewerber inzwischen alle für Hollande aussprachen, wuchsen dessen Chancen für einen klaren Sieg erheblich. Allerdings war nicht klar, ob die Anhänger des Parteilinken Arnaud Montebourg, der im ersten Durchgang auf mehr als 17 Prozent kam, der Wahlempfehlung ihres bevorzugten Kandidaten folgen würden.
Das Verfahren, Anhänger der Partei über die Kandidaten entscheiden zu lassen, ist in Frankreich neu. An der ersten Runde beteiligten sich gut 2,5 Millionen Menschen. Hollande zeigte sich bei der Stimmabgabe zuversichtlich, dass es bei der Stichwahl noch mehr werden könnten. Bei der konservativen Regierung rief die Kandidatenkür ein geteiltes Echo hervor. Während Premierminister François Fillon den Sozialisten ein "modernes" Verfahren bescheinigte, vertrat Präsident Nicolas Sarkozy die Ansicht, es widerspreche dem Geist der 1958 gegründeten Fünften Republik. Sarkozy dürfte sich im kommenden Jahr um eine Wiederwahl bewerben, hat dies aber noch nicht offiziell angekündigt.

Sono aperti dalle 9 i seggi per le primarie del Partito socialista francese, giunte oggi all' appuntamento finale del ballottaggio fra i due migliori classificati del primo turno di domenica scorsa, Francois Hollande (favorito dai sondaggi) e Martine Aubry. Stasera fra le 21 e le 22 si conoscerà il nome dello sfidante di Nicolas Sarkozy alle elezioni presidenziali della prossima primavera, a meno che lo scarto di voti non sia così risicato da costringere gli scrutatori ad andare avanti fino a tarda sera.
I SEGGI - Possono votare, così come al primo turno di questa elezione inedita in Francia, tutti gli iscritti alle liste elettorali, a patto che firmino una carta di adesione ai «valori della sinistra e della Repubblica». Il pagamento di un euro è necessario soltanto per quegli elettori che non hanno già pagato domenica scorsa. Il partito socialista ha organizzato 9.474 seggi e stampato 15 milioni di schede elettorali, 7,5 milioni per ognuno dei due candidati.
IL FAVORITO - Hollande, che ha raccolto il 39,17% al primo turno, è favorito anche per il sostegno che gli hanno garantito altri quattro eliminati di domenica scorsa, fra i quali l'ex compagna Segolène Royal. La Aubry (30,42% al primo turno), non ha affatto gettato la spugna e spera ancora di farcela. Obiettivo dell'operazione di oggi è anche superare la soglia dei 2.665.000 elettori che si sono mobilitati domenica scorsa, con il fine non dichiarato di raggiungere quota tre milioni. (Fonte: Ansa)

Los ciudadanos franceses han comenzado a votar esta mañana en la segunda y definitiva ronda de las primarias del Partido Socialista (PS) para elegir al candidato que se enfrentará al presidente Nicolas Sarkozy en las elecciones de 2012. El favorito para hacerse con la victoria es François Hollande. Hollande, con un 39,2% de los votos en la primera ronda —celebrada el pasado 9 de octubre— parte como favorito por delante de la primera secretaria del PS, Martine Aubry, quien logró un 30,7% de los sufragios. Ambos dejaron atrás a los otros cuatro candidatos —Arnaud Montebourg (17,2%), Ségolène Royal (6,9%), Manuel Valls (5,6%) y Jean-Michel Baylet (0,6%)— que manifestaron su apoyo a Hollande, circunstancia que, en principio, permite prever la victoria del diputado de Corrèze. Hollande y Aubry explicaron este fin de semana en entrevistas publicadas en varios medios su concepto de la izquierda que dicen representar. "Quiero una izquierda fuerte", aseguró Aubry, mientras que Hollande dijo por su parte: "Quiero una izquierda que apacigüe". Los votantes pueden depositar hoy su sufragio hasta las siete de la tarde y deberán firmar una carta de reconocimiento de los valores de "la izquierda y de la República". Como en la ocasión anterior, se pide que cada francés —puede votar cualquier ciudadano sin necesidad de ser militante o ni siquiera simpatizante del PS— done un euro para sufragar los costes de las elecciones primarias.
